6 Ways Your Local Locksmith Can Improve Home Security
Thousands of homes in Scotland are broken into every year, and in most cases the burglar gets in through a door or window with a weak lock. The good news is that a few sensible changes make your home a much harder target.
Whether you've just had a break-in or simply want peace of mind, here are six ways a local locksmith can help.
1. Upgrade your door locks
Many homes still have the locks that were fitted when the door was installed. Older locks can often be picked, bumped or snapped in seconds. I can check what you have and recommend a stronger replacement that suits your door.
Good options include:
- British Standard (BS3621) mortice locks for wooden doors
- Anti-snap euro cylinders for uPVC and composite doors
- Smart or keypad locks, if you'd rather not carry keys
Smart and keyless locks
Smart locks can be opened with your phone, a code or a fingerprint. Most can lock automatically when you leave, and you can give family, cleaners or tradespeople a temporary code instead of a spare key.
2. Secure your windows and patio doors
Patio doors and ground-floor windows are some of the easiest ways into a house, especially if the locks are old or the doors can be lifted off their tracks.
For windows, I can fit:
- Locking window handles
- Replacement locking mechanisms
- Additional locks on older windows
For patio and sliding doors, I can fit:
- Anti-lift blocks that stop the door being lifted out of its frame
- Stronger multipoint locks and cylinders
3. Change the locks when you move in or lose a key
If you've moved into a new home, lost a key or had a break-in, you don't know who else might have a key to your door. Replacing the lock or cylinder means old keys will no longer work. On most uPVC and composite doors, this is a quick job that only needs a new cylinder.
4. Don't forget the garage and shed
Garages and sheds often hold bikes, tools and other valuables, yet they usually have the weakest locks on the property. A stronger lock on the side door, a good padlock and a locking bar on the garage door all make a real difference.
5. Add a few simple extras
Good locks are the first line of defence, but a few simple extras help too:
- A door chain or door viewer, so you can see who's there before you open the door
- Outdoor lights with motion sensors
- A visible alarm or camera, which can put burglars off before they even try
6. Book a free security check
Your doors may look modern and feel secure, but it's hard to know for sure unless you work with locks every day. Having attended many homes after break-ins, I know where the weak spots usually are.
I offer a free home security check across Aberdeen. I'll look at your locks, doors and windows, explain any weak points in plain English and recommend sensible upgrades, with no pressure to go ahead.
