A Brief Guide to Lock Replacement

Lock replacement is one of the most common jobs I do around Aberdeen. There are many different types of lock, and the right one depends on your door and what you need it to do. Here's a short guide to help you understand your options.

Locks I replace

If you need a new lock, I can help. I regularly fit and replace:

  • Front and back door locks
  • uPVC and composite door locks and cylinders
  • Euro cylinders, including anti-snap cylinders
  • Mortice locks
  • Night latches (often called Yale locks) and rim cylinders
  • Patio door locks
  • Garage door locks
  • Smart and keyless locks
  • British Standard locks

There's no call-out fee. I'll look at your door, talk you through the options and recommend the lock that suits it best.

When should you replace a lock?

The most common reasons people call me are:

You've moved into a new home

You don't know how many keys are out there, so it's sensible to change the locks as soon as you move in.

You've lost your keys

If your keys are lost or stolen, replacing the lock or cylinder means they won't work any more.

A key has broken in the lock

I'll remove the broken key and, if the lock has been damaged, replace it.

The lock is faulty or worn

A stiff, sticking or worn lock can fail at the worst moment. It's better to replace it before you're locked out.

You want better security

Many insurers ask for British Standard locks on external doors. Upgrading is often a simple job.

What is a British Standard lock?

A British Standard lock has been tested to meet a minimum security level. Look for a Kitemark and the number BS3621 on the faceplate of the lock. On flats and some other properties, you may also see BS8621.

If you can't find any markings, give me a call and I'll check your locks for you.

Common types of lock

Night latch

A night latch (often called a Yale lock) is fitted to the inside surface of the door and locks automatically when the door closes. It's a quick, affordable option, but on its own it isn't very secure, so it's usually best used together with a mortice lock.

Mortice lock

A mortice lock is fitted inside the door itself rather than on its surface, which makes it much harder to force. It's a good choice for wooden front and back doors, and a British Standard mortice lock is what most insurers ask for.

Euro cylinder

Euro cylinders are used in most uPVC and composite doors. Older cylinders can be snapped in seconds, so I often recommend upgrading to an anti-snap cylinder. It's one of the quickest and best-value security upgrades you can make.

Can I replace a lock myself?

You can, but it's easy to get wrong. The most common problems I see after DIY lock changes are:

  • The wrong size or type of lock, so it doesn't fit or work properly
  • Damage to the door or the locking mechanism
  • A lock that works but isn't actually secure
  • A void manufacturer's warranty
  • More expensive repairs later on

A locksmith will fit the right lock correctly the first time, and the work is guaranteed.
