Local or National Locksmith: Which Should You Call?

One of the questions I'm asked most often in Aberdeen is whether it's better to call a local locksmith or one of the big national companies. Both can do a good job, but they work in very different ways. Here's what you should know before you pick up the phone.

How national locksmith companies work

Many national companies don't employ locksmiths at all. They run a call centre, take your booking and pass the job to whichever contractor is available nearby. The person who answers the phone usually has no locksmith training.

Where national companies make sense

If you run a chain of shops across the UK, one national contract can be simpler to manage and may come with a discount. For a business with sites in many cities, that convenience can be worth it.

Where they fall short

Higher prices. National advertising, call centres and the middleman's commission all have to be paid for, and that cost ends up on your bill. Be wary of adverts like "£29/£39/£49". Those prices rarely cover the actual job, and the final bill can run into hundreds of pounds.

You don't know who's coming. The job goes to a subcontractor, so you can't be sure who will turn up or how experienced they are. Some companies send general tradespeople rather than trained locksmiths.

Slower response. A company that covers the whole country doesn't always have someone close to you, especially outside the city centre.

Websites that look local but aren't. Some national firms run dozens of "local" websites and buy local phone numbers. The number may look like an Aberdeen number, but the call can be answered in London or even abroad.

Why I believe a local locksmith is the better choice

You speak to the person who does the job

When you call me, you speak to me, and I'm the one who comes to your door. Nothing gets lost between a call centre and a contractor.

Fairer prices

I don't pay for national advertising or a franchise, so I can keep my prices fair.

A reputation to protect

I live in Aberdeen, and most of my work comes from recommendations and Google reviews. If I don't do a good job, people will know about it. That's why I take every job seriously.

Local knowledge

I know the doors and locks used in homes around Aberdeen and the problems they tend to have, so I can usually tell you quickly what's wrong and how to fix it.

Someone to call if something goes wrong

If you're not happy with the work, you know exactly who to call. Every job comes with a 12-month guarantee.

How to check a locksmith before you call

Look them up on Google Maps and read their Google reviews. Reviews there are linked to a real business address, so they're much harder to fake than testimonials on a company's own website.
